Salute to Featured Artist David Kuraoka

Written by past Chairman of the Board, Gregg Mueller

Born in Lihue, Kauai, artist and teacher David Kuraoka was influenced early on by his father’s photography, his mother’s arts and crafts, and the skill and discipline developed by his interest in geometry.

From modest beginnings making (in his words) “un-noteworthy” cups for classmates at school, he has now been actively involved with clay for five decades.  He helped initiate Raku Ho`o`lau`le`a, which has attracted artists annually for four decades.

He was awarded a PhD equivalent for research in “Americanizing” raku by San Francisco State University in 1976, where he has been Professor Emeritus since 2012.  This “Americanization” of raku resulted from his no-preconception approach, meaning it was not based on tea or the Japanese Tea Ceremony.

His design philosophy recognizes the beauty of natural forms, combined with a visual language that is truly universal.

His list of accomplishments includes selected one person exhibitions, selected group exhibitions, workshops, events, publications, commissions, honors, and representation in select collections and professional activities.

David Kuraoka’s appearances in HJCC exhibitions in 2013, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, and all the way back to 1982, 1981, and 1980 certainly contributed to the Chamber’s recognition this year as our 39th Annual Commitment to Excellence Featured Artist for 2017 Honoree.  We hope you were fortunate enough to have taken time to experience the important examples of his work first hand at our exhibition last month.

David Kuraoka is a true treasure of the Hawaii community.

Each year the Chamber supports the business of art in Hawaii by organizing an annual venue for the best works of Hawaii’s artists.

Please be certain to attend next year’s benchmark 40th Annual Commitment to Excellence Art Exhibition when we will showcase the next generation of artistic excellence.
