On Saturday, January 4, 2014, the 69th Annual Shinnen Enkai (New Year’s Banquet) was held at Manoa Grand Ballroom. Since 1938, the festivities have included the HJCC’s re-enactment of the famous kabuki play, Shiranami Gonin Otoko, which features a cast of seven prominent Honolulu business professionals playing the parts of five thieves, a policeman and a narrator in full kabuki costume and makeup.
Starring in this year’s production were Peter Yukimura, Reid Chung, Reiko Lewis, Allen Komori, Taylor Kirihara, Clayton Hill and Neil Kuioka. Producers Walter Saito, Bob Nagao, Minoru Ueda, and Ron Ushijima once again provided direction for this year’s play with the support of understudies Rika Hirata and Gregg Mueller.
