On Wednesday, April 10, 2019, 30 HJCC Members and their guests attended the Small Business Advocacy Committee (SBAC) and Managing for Climate Change Committee (MC3) hosted a Business Solutions Workshop titled, “Learn How to Build a Sustainability Strategy for Climate Change and Make Smart Energy Choices” featuring Bettina Mehnert (President & CEO, AHL) and Rachel Fukumoto (Energy Advisor Hawai‘i Energy / Leidos and HJCC Member, SBAC & MC3 Committee Member).
This workshop was designed as a follow up to our first Climate Change workshop with Dr. Chip Fletcher on December 11, 2018, where he provided an awareness of what Climate Change is and the damaging effects it has on our environment, property, and lives. The picture he painted was certainly alarming and created a sense of urgency for everyone to take action.
In our second workshop, Bettina offered some strategies and actionable items we could do personally and as businesses to reduce carbon emission, such as: thinking about ways to minimize our dependence on driving our cars (Biki bicycles, carpooling, bus, walking, etc.), reducing the use of plastic disposable utensils/tableware in our workplace, and designing our roads and buildings to be more environmentally friendly.
Rachel shared some of the programs and services Hawai‘i Energy offers to help individuals and businesses improve their energy efficiency, such as their Energy Advantage program. This program offers lighting upgrades at significantly reduced prices, and they’re currently running a pilot incentive program to increase the installation of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations by providing enhanced rebates and convenience.
There was a wealth of information and actionable items provided, and attendees left with some ideas to adjust their business strategy and tactics to address Climate Change. This was definitely just the tip of the iceberg, and there will be more workshops to educate and help us so we can take an active role in preserving our environment for current and future generations.
Mahalo for your attendance, and see you at the next Business Solutions Workshop!
