Honolulu, HI ~ In early July, heavy rains in Hiroshima Prefecture caused widespread flooding and landslides, which subsequently damaged homes and businesses and caused the deaths of 108 residents with another 6 residents still missing and injuries to 127 residents. Additionally, as of September 4, 2018, the number of damaged houses and businesses in Hiroshima amounted to 13,750.
In view of this tragedy, a committee, “Hawai‘i for Hiroshima”, consisting of concerned organizations with roots and ties to Hiroshima Prefecture, was organized to raise funds for this cause. Wayne Miyao, past Chair of the Board for the HJCC and current Chairman for the Hiroshima Hawaii Sister State Committee, spearheaded the fundraising campaign with the Honolulu Hiroshima Kenjin Kai as its current President.
Total donations received amount to $43,521.00 with several donations pending.
