On Saturday, February 18, 2017, the Chamber members and the Junior Chamber members participated a joint community service project at the Institute for Human Services (IHS). As 10 volunteers were requested by the IHS, total of 13 participants, including six Chamber and seven Junior Chamber members worked to sort out the donation items at their donation room.

The Mission of the agency is: “To create and offer tailored housing solutions for those in crisis, and nurture homeless people toward greater self direction and responsibility”

There are five areas of service provided:

  • Homeless Outreach
  • Supportive Services – for children and families, specialized case management and health care
  • Emergency shelters
  • Specialty shelters – modular containers at Sand Island for individuals with pets and cars
  • Housing Support – rental assistance, security and utilities deposit payments, financial awareness and budgeting education
  • Employment Services – job search, resume building workshops, interviewing skills and dressing for success.

The task was to sort out all of the donations received by the agency. Donations are received daily. Items included, shoes, clothing for children, men and women, house hold items, and toys.

From 9:00 am to 12 noon, very large laundry type bins were sorted out by like items. A total of seven Bins were cleared out and clothes were folded and hung by gender.

Mahalo for the following who participated: Chamber members – Jeff Furumura, Clayton Hill, Michael Kaya, Sandra Tory, Brandon Miyagi; Junior Chamber members – Lara Karamatsu, Ryan Lam, Garrett Lau, Aimee Nelson, George Takase, and Kim Takata. And off course. Special mahalo to staff, Mina Sakai for her participation and support of the project.

It was a great joint project with the Junior Chamber members and discussion took place on possible future joint projects.

Mahalo to all!
