Inauguration, Member Recognition, and 125th Anniversary Celebration

Empowering Success, Inspiring Innovation

On Thursday, July 17, 2025, we gathered for a night to remember — a milestone celebration that honored our past, celebrated our present, and looked boldly toward the future. The Inauguration, Member Recognition, and 125th Anniversary event brought together HJCC members, leaders, supporters, and friends for an evening of elegance, inspiration, and heartfelt appreciation.

A Historic Milestone: 125 Years of Excellence

Reaching 125 years is no small feat. Since our founding in 1900, our organization has stood as a pillar in the community — advocating for the promotion of business and growth in Hawaii based upon the principle "Members Supporting Members". This anniversary marked more than just the passage of time; it reflected generations of dedication, resilience, and shared purpose.

During the celebration, guests were taken on a journey through our organization’s rich history through a special video presentation. Archival photos, historical highlights, and stories from longtime members reminded us of how far we’ve come and why our mission remains just as relevant today. Mahalo to Scott Mason and his team for creating a wonderful video for our special anniversary year.

Welcoming Our New Leaders

A central highlight of the evening was the Inauguration of our new Chair of the Board Derek Kaneshiro, board and officers. We proudly welcomed Chair Derek Kaneshiro (VP, ATM Product Manager of Central Pacific Bank), whose leadership, vision, and commitment will shape the next chapter of our legacy. The oath-taking ceremony was a powerful moment, affirming their readiness to serve and uphold the values that define our organization.

Mahalo to HJCC Member and Deputy Managing Director Krishna Jayaram for installing our new Chair.

Honoring Those Who Make a Difference

The event also served as a heartfelt Member Recognition ceremony. We honored outstanding individuals whose dedication, volunteerism, and support have uplifted our organization and community. These honorees embody the spirit of service, and we were proud to shine a spotlight on their contributions.

Outstanding Member of the Year

Each fiscal year, a selected individual(s) of the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce is designated by the Chair of the Board of Directors to be the "HJCC Outstanding Member of the Year" for significant contributions to the Chamber.

This year, we honored Past Chair Kristi Inkinen Yanagihara for her outstanding support to many of the HJCC's signature events.

Kuroko Award

Kuroko in Japanese describes the kabuki stage people who are dressed in black and assist the performers with stage props and dress. They are behind the scenes and do not stand out for the audience. Every year the selection of the Kuroko Award is done by the Chamber staff, who can readily identify these members who support the Chamber’s events and activities behind the scenes.

This year, the HJCC staff honored Kathryn Fujitani, Kennedy Smythe, and Michelle Wong for volunteering and supporting HJCC events behind the scenes.

Outstanding Committee Chairs

The "Outstanding Committee Chair Award" recognizes a committee leader who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication, and effectiveness in guiding their team toward successful outcomes.

This year, we honored Kristin Alm (Chair of the Community Relations Committee) and Kacie Hirotsu (Chair of the Membership Development Committee).

Outstanding Member Company of the Year

The "Outstanding Member-Company Award" recognizes exceptional contributions and active participation by a member
organization within the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce. Recipients are celebrated for their positive impact,
consistent engagement, and dedication to excellence in both their operations and community involvement.

We had Past Chair Christine Kubota help us present this brand new award category to Edward Enterprises, Inc. (HJCC Member since 2005) for their support toward not only our organization, but various other local organizations and groups.

A Night of Connection and Celebration

Set against a beautiful backdrop at the Sheraton Waikiki, the evening featured a taiko performance by Dragon Beat, an oli and hula performance by Kumu Hula Blane Kia and Halau, an Okinawan dance by the Nakasone Dance Academy, a curated dinner, and moments of joy and reflection. HJCC Director and Member Kristin Alm was our beautiful emcee, Deputy Consul General Hiroki Haruta gave the kanpai toast, and HJCC Director and Chair-Elect Kaiulani Shinsato closed our event with a tejime. Kaiulani General Members connected across generations — from new faces to seasoned veterans — all sharing stories and laughter.

As we toasted to 125 years, there was a palpable sense of pride and unity in the room. The celebration reminded us not only of what we’ve achieved, but also of the vibrant community that fuels our future.

Looking Ahead

With renewed leadership, a strong foundation, and an engaged membership, we are more energized than ever to continue our mission. The 125th Anniversary was not just a celebration of history — it was a call to action for the future.

Thank you to all who attended, supported, and helped make the evening a success. Here’s to the next 125 years of progress, purpose, and community.
