80th Year Commemoration of the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima

IMG_7527

On this solemn day, we remember the lives lost and forever changed by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.

A bell ringing ceremony was held in Hiroshima at 8:15am and also in Honolulu at 1:15pm — the exact moment the bomb was dropped — connecting us across the ocean in a shared moment of reflection, remembrance, and commitment to peace.

The HJCC, together with HJCC Member and Past Chair Wayne Kato of Painter’s Warehouse, has repainted the Torii Gate that sits on the Moiliili Triangle Park back to its original orange-reddish color for this special occasion. The Torii Gate is a replica of the world famous Torii Gate at the water’s edge of Miyajima Island in Hiroshima and was constructed in observance of the HJCC’s 100th Anniversary. The gate was donated and built by the Hiroshima Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Hiroshima Prefecture & City Government and later donated to the City & County of Honolulu.

May we never forget.
