History of the Shoko Shiranami Gonin Otoko

Written by Ronald Ushijima

The Beginning

Since the very first performance on January 5, 1938, countless HJCC Chamber members have participated in this HJCC modified kabuki performance.

The Shoko Shiranami Gonin Otoko Kabuki play was first performed by HJCC members on January 5, 1938 at their New Year’s Celebration at the Mochizuki Restaurant in Liliha.  Since then, the Shiranami Gonin Otoko has been performed annually as part of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce’s New Year’s celebration, except during the World War II years (1942 - 1947) when the HJCC was inactive and in 2021 at the height of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic.  In the early years, the New Year’s Celebration was traditionally held on January 5, that signified  the end of the January 1 - 5 New Year’s celebration in Japan.

The performance is based on the Kabuki play, “Shiranami Gonin Otoko,” that debuted in Japan in 1862. HJCC’s rendition of the performance is from Act  4, Scene 6,  of the original Shiranami Gonin Otoko Kabuki performance that took place along the bank of the  River Inase in Shizuoka Prefecture.   The performance portrays 5 dandy samurai thieves (dorobos) who are captured by a clever policeman. They each brag and relate interesting stories about themselves, and eventually end up in a fight and escape with the Policeman in pursuit.
