2017 Generational Award Honoree

M. Harada Enterprises, Inc.
The Harada Family

Harada Enterprises was founded in 1935 in the Central Oahu community of Wahiawa.  At the young age of 20, Marian Harada together with her mother Shio, purchased a small restaurant called the Sukiyaki Inn.

An outdoor skating rink was started in 1938 after Marian got the idea from GIs stationed at Schofield.  A year later, Dot’s Drive Inn was built to accommodate the skaters.  In 1947 she started a small grocery store called Marigold Market.  She then purchased a banquet hall in the back of Dot’s Drive Inn and used it as a night club bringing in entertainment from Japan and the mainland in 1954. In 1956 she opened Marian’s at Haleiwa that served tourists and locals for 11 years.  The catering business grew at a rapid pace and in 1980 Marian built a spacious state-of-the- art kitchen in back of Dot’s.

In 1982, Marian asked nephew James Harada to understudy with her with the plan to take over the family business.  Jim was enjoying a successful career as an accountant working in Los Angeles.  Marian was very persuasive and Jim agreed to return home.  He worked under Marian for seven years learning the business.  Together they opened JR’s Restaurant in the Mililani Town Center and continued to expand the catering business.

In the mid-90s, Jim brought eldest son Scott, a Punahou graduate and recent graduate of the University of Redlands into the business.  In 1998, Marian’s won the contract for the Manoa Grand Ballroom at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii.
