On Friday, January 6, 2026, HJCC Members, family and friends gathered for a truly special evening at the 80th Annual Shinnen Enkai New Year’s Celebration Event. This milestone celebration marked not only the beginning of a new year, but also the continuation of a cherished tradition that has brought members together for eight decades.

The evening was filled with culture, connection, and unforgettable performances, and it was made possible through the dedication of so many individuals who contributed their time, talent, and support.

A Festive Welcome in the Foyer

As guests arrived, the foyer was bustling with excitement and activity. As attendees hopped off the elevator, they were greeted and blessed by the reigning 73rd Cherry Blossom Festival Queen Ariel Sanders and HJCC President & CEO Steven Teruya under the Chamber's Torii Gate. Attendees had the opportunity to enjoy a variety of cultural experiences before the program began, including a wonderful mochi pounding demonstration by the volunteers from Tenrikyo Mission Hawaii, which brought energy and tradition to the start of the evening.

Guests also visited the omamori charm sales by HJCC Member Izumo Taishakyo Mission of Hawaii, where many showed their support while taking home meaningful symbols of good fortune for the year ahead. The lively atmosphere created the perfect beginning to our New Year’s celebration.

The evening officially began with a powerful and captivating taiko performance by Ryugen Taiko. The dynamic rhythms and commanding presence of the performers immediately set the tone for the night, filling the room with energy and anticipation.

Behind the Scenes: Becoming Kabuki Stars

While guests gathered and enjoyed the foyer activities, an equally special transformation was taking place backstage. With the dedicated support of the Hanayagi Dancing Academy staff, the cast was carefully prepared to take the stage as true kabuki stars—complete with traditional makeup, costumes, and the spirit of this timeless art form.

The Hanayagi Dancing Academy has been providing the Kabuki Makeup and Kimono for the Gonin Otoko Cast since 1938, and their continued commitment to this tradition is nothing short of extraordinary. Their unwavering support of the Chamber over the decades, and their tireless efforts to perpetuate Japanese cultural traditions here in Hawaiʻi, are deeply appreciated.

Thanks to their guidance and care, the cast was able to step into their roles with authenticity, confidence, and pride.

A Toast to the New Year!

Following the taiko performance, guests were greeted with warm welcome messages to commemorate this special 80th anniversary celebration. Consul General Hideaki Chotoku offered a kanpai toast allowing everyone in attendance to welcome the new year together in the spirit of community and friendship and The program also included a meaningful New Year's celebratory remarks by Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke, helping us ring in the New Year with gratitude, reflection, and hope for the year ahead.

The celebration continued with a special singing performance by two of our talented members -- Craig Hirasaki representing Team White and Jerry Tokairin representing Team Red -- who offered a preview of the beloved Kohaku Red and White Singing Contest. Their performance added a joyful and festive spirit to the evening and delighted the audience.

A Flawless Cast Performance

The highlight of the night was the cast’s truly outstanding kabuki performance. After two months of dedicated rehearsals, the cast delivered a flawless presentation filled with artistry, discipline, and professionalism.

Their hard work shone through in every moment on stage, and it was clear that the performance was the result of both individual commitment and incredible teamwork. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to every cast member for bringing such a memorable production to life.

We also offer our deepest gratitude to the Sensei's, whose tireless coaching and guidance over the past two months made this performance possible. Their patience, expertise, and unwavering support were essential in shaping the cast’s success.
