Chair’s Message
Leading with Aloha, Building Connections That Last a Lifetime
Members of the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce, distinguished guests, family and friends,
Before I speak about the year ahead, I want to first acknowledge and express my deepest gratitude to those who came before me.
As a yonsei, or fourth-generation Japanese American, I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors who came to Hawai‘i to work on the sugar plantations. Through their sacrifice, resilience, and unwavering perseverance, they created opportunities for future generations like me that they themselves may never have imagined. Growing up, I spent every summer with my grandparents and family in the little towns of Pa’auilo and Honoka’a on the Big Island. They, and my dad, who is here tonight, taught me a lot about showing up, working hard, and caring deeply about the people around you. I carry their legacy with great pride and humility.

I also want to recognize the seven remarkable wahine who have served as Chair of the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce before me. Each of these women led with strength, grace, and vision, helping to shape this organization and paving the way for leaders like me. It is because of their dedication and leadership that I am able to stand before you tonight, and I am honored to continue the path they helped create.
It is with this deep sense of gratitude and responsibility that I say “okage sama de” and step into the role of Chair of the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce.
My theme for this year is: Leading with Aloha, Building Connections That Last a Lifetime.
At my company, Hawaiian Electric, we have a Declaration that starts with “we are a company of, and for, Hawai’i.” We are deeply rooted in this place that we all call home and its people. It is the same way with the Chamber, which just turned 125 years old last year. This is why I wanted to focus this year on “Leading with Aloha.” To me, leading with aloha is a privilege and kuleana unique to Hawai’i. It is more than a philosophy—it is a way of being. Aloha is tangible, often quiet, but hugely impactful. Aloha is present whenever we show up with respect, kindness, humility, and a sincere commitment to others. In a world that often moves quickly, aloha reminds us to slow down, to truly see one another, listen to one another, and care for one another.
“Building Connections That Last a Lifetime” has been my personal experience with the Chamber. Since I joined the Chamber in 2018, I have made countless friends and business connections, many of whom are in this room, who I will cherish over my lifetime. I know this is a shared experience by Chamber members. It is truly one of the best things about joining the Chamber – the people you meet. They are like gold. The connections we make through this Chamber go beyond business transactions or networking opportunities. They are relationships built on trust, shared values, mutual support, and a collective desire to strengthen this organization and our community. This is what we mean when we say “Members Supporting Members.” It is not just a slogan—it is something we live every day through how we show up for one another. I have no doubt the friendships and connections that are shared in this room will last a lifetime.
As Chair, my hope is to continue to bring people together—to strengthen the relationships we already have while creating new ones across generations, businesses, and communities. To honor our heritage while embracing new ideas and creating opportunities for the future generation of leaders in Hawai’i. And to lead in a way that reflects the values that have brought all of us here tonight.
